Andrew Kurka

The Barracuda Foundation is proud to partner with U.S. Paralympic Downhill Skier Gold Medalist, Andrew Kurka. Andrew is a 2014, 2018 and 2022 Paralympian. Andrew is also a 2017 Downhill World Champion, 2017 Downhill Globe Champion, and 2017 Super G overall World Champion. Andrew is also a gold and silver medalist from the 2018 Paralympic games in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

Growing up Andrew, was an avid athlete with a dream to make the U.S. Olympic Wrestling Team but when he was 13 he broke his back and lost the use of his legs from the knees down. In his own words Andrew describes his accident "as more of a blessing than a curse, giving him the chance to change lives, inspire and motivate others. Pursuing my dream of being a champion hasn't changed." 

Andrew was born and raised in Alaska, in his spare time he goes fishing and spends his life outdoors. He got started as an adaptive alpine skier through a program known as Challenge Alaska. Since then, he has pursued his dream of being the best in the world and helping others in the process. Andrew is building a bed and breakfast with tours to help people with disabilities enjoy the wilds of Alaska. While speaking at schools and mentoring children through multiple programs like Classroom Champions. 

In addition to partnering with Andrew, the Barracuda Foundation is also a proud sponsor the work he does with Challenge Alaska. Challenge Alaska improves the lives of people with disabilities, their families and the whole community through adaptive sports, therapeutic recreation and education. The Barracuda Foundation has supported Challenge Alaska by sponsoring campers, video work, and most recently built a ramp for the easier wheelchair access and provided gear for the fishing trips Andrew organizes for Challenge Alaska.
